Entry qualifications

Although there are no formal entry requirements, most candidates taking the Diploma have a good degree (2:2 or better), although not necessarily in a related discipline.

Assessment

All Diploma subjects are tested via 3 hour written papers, except for Regulation and Compliance and Investment Analysis, which are 3 hours 15 minutes.

Pass mark

The pass mark for all subjects is reviewed and moderated by individual subject panels after each exam sitting.
The pass mark is not published, but candidates should assume that it will be not less than 50%.

Exam grades

Distinction=Grade A. Likely to require at least 80%
Credit=Grade B. Likely to require at least 70%
Pass=Grade C.
Marginal Fail= Grade D. Within 3 marks of the pass mark.
Fail= Grade E. 30% to Grade D boundary
Unclassified=Grade U. Fail to gain 30%

Unsuccessful candidates may apply for a Marks Analysis of their exam paper. This does not constitute a remarking of the paper, but is a comment on performance, based upon the marks awarded

Time limit on gaining the Diploma

No time limit is imposed by the SII but FSA specifies time limits within which Appropriate Examinations must be achieved e.g. for the activity of advising and dealing in securities and derivatives the qualification must be passed before starting the activity. (FSA time limits vary according to the activity and should be checked on FSA's website.)

The Award

Certificates will be issued on successful completion of each paper as well as an overall certificate for the qualification.

Prize

There is an annual awards ceremony, at which subject prizes are presented to the candidates who gain the highest marks in each individual subject. There is also a Regional prize for the most successful candidate who completes the Diploma and is employed outside London, as well as the a prize for the candidate who is most successful overall.
