SII Educational Trust
The SII created the SII Educational Trust to broaden the scope of its scholarship and sponsor a number of financial subjects within its accredited Centres of Excellence. The Trust incorporates the Stephen Cooke Scholarship award.
The Stephen Cooke Scholarship Award
Under the new Trust, scholarships will be awarded to candidates from its Centres of Excellence as follows:

1. Premier Scholarship
Up to two Premier Scholarship of £5,000 each
Award Criteria
Each SII Centre of Excellence is invited to submit the best essay for consideration for a Premier Scholarship. All applicants will compete for up to two awards judged on the basis of:
An essay
A general knowledge test
An interview

2. General Scholarship
One General Scholarship of £3,000 for each Centre of Excellence.
Award Criteria
Each Centre of Excellence may be awarded one General Scholarship. A minimum of three and a maximum of five candidates will be determined by the Centre of Excellence. Candidates who have received a Premier Scholarship may not be considered for a General Award. However, unsuccessful candidates for the Premier Scholarship will be eligible for consideration for a General Scholarship.
The Centre of Excellence will perform the initial selection process for the General Scholarship on a criteria based assessment to be agreed with the Chair of the SII Educational Trust. This may involve reference to another piece of work or activity which could be part of the student’s general course.

Entry Criteria for All Scholarships
The applicants will need to be registered at a Centre of Excellence and:
entering their second year as an undergraduate, OR first year as a post graduate student, enrolled on a specified course at SII’s designated Centres of Excellence
born in the UK OR born in the EU and can provide evidence that they intend to work for a minimum of three years in the UK
must not have been a previous winner under the SII Scholarship scheme
Essay
Against the background of a stream of reports analysing causes of the financial crisis, such as those from Lord
Turner and Sir David Walker, a common theme emerges on the need to review the roles of non-executive
directors, institutional shareholders and regulators. The essay title for the 2010 Stephen Cooke Scholarship is:-
"Analyse the current corporate governance structure of banks and financial institutions looking at the
responsibilities of the non-executive directors, institutional shareholders and regulators; and their role and
effectiveness in holding senior management to account. What changes would you suggest to help avoid
repeating recent mistakes?"
All essays should be no more than 2,500 words and must be submitted to each Centre of Excellence by Monday 1 February 2010

SII Stephen Cooke Scholarship 2009 Winner
Winner: Chris Stevens
Award-winning essay: To what extent has the world‟s economic and financial power moved from West to East?
Stephen Cooke was a founding member of the board of the Securities & Investment Institute, the London Stock Exchange and the Association for Private Client Stockbrokers and Investment Managers (APCIMS). He died at a young age in 1997. Stephen’s particular passion was education and, in recognition of all he had done towards the creation of the modern City, his friends and business associates set out to raise funds to provide scholarships for students considering a career in the financial services industry, which would keep his name alive. In recognition of the closer links being established the university sector, the SII board has agreed to establish an educational trust to enable students from universities recognised by the SII as centres of excellence to be able to compete for more scholarships in 2009.The 2008 winner of the scholarship, is studying for an MSc in Investment Management at Cass Business School.
Euroclear Prize in Memory of Andrew Winckler 2009 Winner
Winner:Michelle Snaith
Andrew Winckler had a long career in the financial services industry both as a practitioner and in regulation as former chief executive of the Securities & Investment Board, the precursor to the Financial Services Authority. Andrew was latterly a partner of Ernst & Young and chaired its regulatory practice in the UK. He was also as a member of the Board of Euroclear PLC and a commissioner of the Jersey Financial Services Commission until he died at a tragically early age in 2007. In recognition of Andrew Winckler’s contribution to financial services in the UK, and to preserve his memory, Euroclear has generously agreed to sponsor this new award for ten years. This is the second year of the award.
