Candidate Commonroom: Flowchart

Welcome to our Qualifications Flowchart. You can use this tool to get help and guidance for the entire process: from choosing which qualification is right for you all the way to next steps upon becoming qualified.

Click any of the buttons below to see what advice and suggestions we offer....

Step 1: SII has a wide ranging suite of qualifications that meet a host of different needs so be sure to select the one that is right for you.

Step 2: If you know what line of work you wish to move into but are not sure which qualification to take, please see our Qualifications Navigator for help.

Step 3: If you already hold other qualifications, you may be exempt from certain SII exam units. You can check this via our Exemptions page. Exemptions are available for certain modules in the IAQ, Certificates and the SII Diploma. Please contact Client Services for assistance.

SII exams are provided in two formats: computer-based testing (CBT) or narrative (written).

For detailed information on all SII exams, please see the Exam Information section of the Candidate Commonroom.

Step 1: Decide if you want to enrol on a training course. These are offered by SII-accredited organisations. Please contact them directly to book a place.

You can also prepare by self-study. The SII provides workbooks and e-learning materials for most of its exams, available via Client Services. You can also buy SII workbooks in our online bookshop.

Step 2: All candidates are strongly advised to check the Candidate Update for information about syllabus updates. For general help on preparing for CBT and narrative exams, please see our main website.

Step 3: As your exam approaches, you should:

  • have prepared for all topics in the syllabus and understand the nature of the examination you will be sitting
  • have looked at any sample questions or past papers for the unit you are taking
  • know where the exam venue is and how long it will take you to get there
  • have read the exam regulations and policies
  • have the necessary identification
  • Step 1: If you have used an Accredited Training Provider, they may book your exam for you. Otherwise, SII examinations can be booked via Client Services on 020 7645 0680, online, or by filling in the appropriate exam booking form.

Step 2: For first-time bookings ONLY, a one-off fee, called the Qualification Registration Fee, must be paid. Once paid there is no repeat of the fee required, no matter how many times a candidate takes any further exam.

Step 3: Candidates also need to complete the Qualification Registration Form once for each overall qualification being studied. It is important to do this for two reasons. The first is that without it, we are unable to release your official exam result to you.

Secondly, filling in this form when you book your first SII exam triggers free Student membership that will last as long as you continue to study.

Step 1: For CBT exams, provisional results are given instantly and official results follow 14 days later. For narrative examinations, results are issued 10 weeks after the exam. If you do not receive anything, check if you filled out a Qualification Registration Form.

Step 2: If you were unsuccessful and wish to try again, please familiarise yourself with our re-sit policy.

Step 3: Once you have passed your exam, there are several options. You will may now qualify for membership of the SII. You can check using our eligibility checker.

SII members have access to a large range of CPD tools to further enhance the knowledge and skills instilled via examination.

Step 4: Move on to a higher-level qualification like the SII Diploma or the SII Masters.

Use of higher qualifications, membership and CPD all lead to career progression opportunities.
