1) Membership subscriptions 2005/6

All SII memberships are now due for their annual renewal. Invoicing for this is now underway, with the official due-date being April 1st.

The 2005/6 subscription fees as agreed upon by the SII Board of Directors and are as follows:

Student: £55 (no increase)
Affiliate: £80 (no increase)
Associate: £85
Member: £130
Fellow: £130

All firms who have agreed with the Institute to be billed directly will be settling subscriptions for their staff, with the remaining members either being billed individually, or holding a Direct Debit account with the Institute. If you would like to know how you are due to be billed, please contact us on
billing@sii.org.uk, or call the Membership department on 020 7645 0650.

2) New Qualification Registration Fee introduced

In order to cover the increasing operational costs of meeting the regulatory requirements involved with becoming an Awarding Body, the Securities & Investment Institute has introduced a Qualification Registration Fee of £25. This fee came into effect as of the 1st January 2005, and, once paid, covers the exam candidate for all future exam programmes.

The good news for all SII members (Student, Affiliate, ASI, MSI, FSI) is that this fee only applies to non-members. All SII members are able to study for any SII exam without paying this fee. Anyone who pays the fee but then subsequently applies for membership (provided that their application is received within one month of the fee being paid) will have this £25 offset against the cost of their application.

Please note that all exam candidates, both member and non-member, are required to complete a Qualification Registration Form for all SII exam programmes. For further information on the Qualification Registration Form (QRF), please contact our
Client Services department.

3) New 'Affiliate' membership category launched!

Affiliate' is the new category of membership launched recently by the Securities & Investment Institute. It is aimed at those who work in the financial services industry, but who, due to their job functions, would probably never need to embark on an industry qualification. These include HR and training staff, secretarial/PA staff, marketing, and also IT staff.

For full details on the many benefits of this new category of membership, the fees and the application form, please visit our new
Affiliate page.

4) New Online Bookshop launched for SII members!

The Institute is pleased to reveal a new, online membership benefit in the form of the Global Investor Bookshop. Please
click here to access this new service. All SII members can log in to an exclusively discounted section.

  • 15% discount off the RRP on most titles, some at 30%!
  • Over 7,000 for you to choose from
  • Titles in stock are dispatched the same day
  • Powerful search engine.

5) Recognised Qualifications update: Calling all CFA holders!

As part of the review of eligibility criteria for Fellowship, the Institute is pleased to announce that all MSI members of at least three years who hold the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) qualification can now apply to become Securities & Investment Institute Fellows!

This new amendment to our list of
recognised qualifications comes into immediate effect. Any MSI members of at least three years who hold the CFA are welcome to submit an application to upgrade their membership to the level of FSI to the Membership department.

6) Student Membership Open To All

Until now, student membership has been restricted to individuals studying for the Institute’s Diploma. Since August 2004, it has been opened up to all those registering on any Securities & Investment Institute exams, and in the case of exams other than the Diploma, is optional. The reason for doing this is to bring these individuals into the Institute’s community of members at an earlier stage in their career, rather than at the time they become qualified. It also provides the Institute with a broader base, and the opportunity to grow and become even more influential as the voice of the securities and investment field.

Exam candidates are sent an email as soon as they have booked onto an exam, explaining the benefits and inviting them to join.

More importantly there is a range of benefits, including a free dictionary (Dictionary of Financial and Securities Terms), normal retail price £24.99; 4 free CPD events a year (normally £40 each for non-members); access to the increasing information resource in the members’ area of our website and a discount of 20% off any one conference every year.

All enquiries regarding Student Membership should be directed to memberservices@sii.org.uk or phone the Student Helpline on 020 7645 0656, or by fax on 020 7645 0601.

7) Fellowship eligbility- new route

The Institute has been reviewing the membership admission procedures for our highest category of membership, FSI. The existing route to Fellowship (to hold the rank of MSI for at least three years and to hold the full SII Diploma) has not changed.

However, there now exists the opportunity for those in senior roles to submit an application for Fellowship even if they have not taken our Diploma qualification. Instead, Fellowship would be based on length of industry experience and seniority. For full details on the criteria, and to download the applications forms, please visit our
FSI via experience page.

8) Upcoming SII Events

SII 2nd Annual Conference: Operational Risk - Thursday 19th May 2005, London Chamber of Commerce

Qualifies for 6 hours and 20minutes of CPD.

Hear insights into the qualifying criteria and timeframe for implementation of Basel II and the EU Directive, and benefit from a case study examining how to overcome the practical problems in implementing an effective operational risk strategy.

All MSI and FSI members qualify for a 30% discount on all SII Conferences, with ASI members benefiting from a 20% discount. All SII Students qualify for a 20% discount on any one SII Conference a year, and Affiliate members may attend any one SII Conference annually at a 30% discount. In order to book, please contact our Client Services department on 020 7645 0680, or
clientservices@sii.org.uk.

9) SII CPD Online: New Price Stabilisation module launched

SII CPD Online offers financial practitioners topical information as part of a professional development programme. This attractive product allows busy professionals to easily absorb the most current information at a time to suit them. <p>

The SII is pleased to announce a new module in SII CPD online: Price Stablisation. The objective of this short course is to explain the UK regulatory requirements associated with the process of stabilising an offering of securities.

10) Coming soon: 2 new PIFs

In response to requests from members, the SII is in the process of launching two new Professional Interest Forums (PIFs): Operations and IT.

The Compliance and the Risk forums both have over 250 members; and the Training Directors’ forum, relaunched in 2004, now has representatives on it from the top 50 investment banks, private client brokers and fund managers. Organised as discussion groups, forums are open to members of the Institute and convene over lunch on a regular basis. If you:

Please email operationsforum@sii.org.uk (for the Operations forum) or itforum@sii.org.uk (for the IT forum) with your name, membership number if known, email address and direct dial telephone number.
