Profile of an external specialist: Tony Blunden FCSI

No matter how hectic his schedule may become, Tony Blunden FCSI sees real value in supporting the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) as an external specialist.

He fits the responsibility around his job as head of consulting for risk specialist Chase Cooper in the City. Tony says: “Although my role with the Institute does take some time, I feel that it’s important to ensure that the City’s premier professional qualification body for financial services continues to operate its exams at the highest standards. I also enjoy giving something back.”

Nowadays, Tony is a member of the CISI’s exams board - its key governance panel for qualifications - and plays a central role with the Advanced Certificate in Operational Risk exam. Not only does he devise content for the exam but he is also a moderator for the qualification, re-marking exam papers that have already been assessed by the chief examiner to ensure that candidates are treated consistently and fairly.

“It’s essential that candidates have faith in the Institute to deliver reliable, justifiable and repeatable marking in its exams. The moderator has a vital and key role in this,” he says.

Additionally, Tony is an external trainer for the CISI, running regular workshops in operational risk. He says: “To be an effective CISI external specialist, you need sufficient knowledge and experience to pass the exam that you are involved in with flying colours, a willingness to give some time and an ability to relate to an exam candidate. A sense of humour and patience also help.” n

Do you have the expertise to help the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) to develop and maintain any of its exams or workbooks?

If so, the Institute would like to hear from you as a potential external specialist. The CISI relies on industry practitioners to offer their knowledge and expertise to help create and keep its qualifications and learning materials up to date.

There are around 300 external specialists who have volunteered to assist the Institute’s Qualifications team, but more are needed.

There are several types of specialists: workbook authors, workbook reviewers, item (question) writers, item editors and exam panel members. All of them receive several benefits to thank them for their involvement.
